Some of them don’t like it because it comes from the term “down-home,” and I think that “down home” could be used in a variety of ways, like “back-yard.
Now that I’ve gone over the definition (which is admittedly broad), I think it’s fair to say that down home doesn’t necessarily mean “downstairs.” It’s more of a general concept to describe a room that you can stay in. I think I’ve made that clear. It’s also one of those words that has become an annoying catch-all.
I think this is a common issue, its the word that our ancestors used to describe a very specific type of home that is now often just a generic term for an entire class of homes. You can have a down-home kitchen, down-home bedroom, down-home living room, down-home bathroom… you get the point. It also comes up when people want to label a home that has a basement in its name.

We’ve got the word down-home to refer to a group of homes that share some of the same features, however it is not the only word for such a home. For example, there is the up-home, mid-home, and even mid-home.
