I am a builder, and I love it when people can understand this. I have seen construction workers get so frustrated with the amount of effort they put into building something, they can’t help but get frustrated at themselves. I’ve seen a lot of builders get so focused on the task at hand that they forget about the people they’re working for. Building is a very collaborative project.
The idea of “building” and “building contractors” is not a new one, but the way we discuss it is. In the past, builders have been viewed as a group of individual contractors who take on the challenges of building a house. This idea of building contractors is a bit outdated as building contractors are not the same today as they were in the past. Today, building contractors are companies that take on the challenges of building a home and have their own set of responsibilities.
In the past we would say, “We’re taking care of you. We’re building for you. We need to get that job done by the end of the week.” That kind of building contractor mentality is gone. We now have contractors that we work with one at a time. We’re no longer a group of contractors working together. We’re a single company that is working with a single contractor.
The whole notion of contracting has changed. Many projects have been moved to a separate contractor. In the past we would say, We build for you. It is a great idea to take care of you. It is much better to take care of someone and to build for him. I think it is also a great idea to take care of someone and to build for them. We’re not talking about a home builder here, we’re talking about someone who actually builds houses. Not just homes, but high-end houses (think of the house in the “Blade Runner” movie that’s the most expensive home you can buy).
