While we may not be as involved in the funeral home business as we once were, we are still deeply affected by the needs of our colleagues, clients, and families. So, while it might be easier to let things slide, we often don’t think about how these people and families are impacted.
I don’t think there’s any question here. Our industry is a “soft” job. People don’t usually leave the funeral home business because they can’t afford what they used to be making or because they don’t want to spend their lives working in a funeral home. Instead, they leave because they can’t.
Thats where a lot of the problems lie. In the funeral home industry, there are only two industries where a small percentage of people are still in the business. One of them is funeral homes. The other is cremation. And in each of these two industries, we are in the minority of the workers. The majority of people working in funeral homes are not cremation workers.
The funeral home industry is generally a “hot” industry, because people in the industry are usually young people who aren’t getting the full value of their time. In the funeral home industry, we have to work long hours, and we are not compensated enough for it. Because of that, we tend to be at the beginning of our careers. A lot of people try to leave before they have a good chance of making enough money.
You can make a lot of money while working at a funeral home. The average salary for a cremation worker is around $32K, and the average salary for an embalmer is around $32M. So people making that much money at that job are making quite a lot of money.
In short, the average funeral home job pays about $80K a year, and the average embalmer pays about $35K. So, assuming you work until you die (and we’re still a bit uncertain here since most funeral homes only pay on death), you’re making about $125K per year.
This is the only way that I can find out if you are making this much money. Even then, it is only the second time that I’ve been able to compare a job type to salary, and the first time was for burials. This is because the funeral home job I was working at at the time didn’t pay much better than the embalmer job I was at.
I am a funeral director and my annual salary ranges from $70K to $100K. If I do a full time job for 35K per year I make between $100K to $135K. If I do a full time job for only 35K per year, then I make $75K to $130K. Not bad at all, even when you consider that most funeral homes only offer high paying jobs.
I believe the funeral home job is a “lifestyle”. That is, unlike the embalmer job, the funeral director is paid for the time he spends in a funeral home rather than for the time he spends in the home of the deceased. So he isn’t really paying a salary just for the time he spends in the funeral home, but because he is required to spend time there, he has the same salary as a non-fancy embalmer.
