We live in a society that has been influenced by the media. One of the major selling points of the media is that it is entertaining, or at least entertaining enough for us to watch, but we are also conditioned to understand that we need to consume, process, and reflect on the content we are being exposed to. We are being trained to feel ourselves to be responsible thinkers and to seek the answer to our questions rather than simply acting on our impulse to act.

I am reminded of an anecdote from the early 1990s that I’m sure will sound very familiar to those of you who are reading this: The late Senator Bob Dole was invited to a dinner party and asked if he would like to go and watch a movie. He replied, “I have a really good friend who lives in San Francisco and I would like to go and visit if I could.” The dinner party replied, “Oh, you’re not going to San Francisco.
