This log home addition is one of many additions that are going up in the Spring of 2017.

When adding homes, the designers often give more space to the basement and the garage, leaving the kitchen, living room and dining room to the owner. This is a practice that comes with its own set of consequences. If you decide to add a loft/office, you have to get a permit, but if you decide to add an extra bedroom or more bedrooms, these extra rooms will then have to have permit fees too.

In the case of this log home addition, the design team gave the owner the option to add the garage to the basement. It was a decision that the owner wasn’t happy with, but was it really so bad of a decision? It’s one of a few log home additions that do not include a living room. If you’ve built a home with an open floor plan, then you probably don’t need an extra bedroom there.

The downside is that if you decide to add an extra bedroom, you do have to get a permit to add the room. Depending on your local building codes, you can expect to pay $5,000 or more for a permit to add a bedroom.

In a log home you can add a bedroom without a permit. That is because you can only add one bedroom per lot and they can only be made accessible through a doorway. Also, you can only add a room without a permit if you can show that it will be within the lot. You can make it accessible, but you can’t build it into the lot. The downside is that you have to sign a building permit form to add the room.

It sounds like our new friend on the log home addition thread is going to have an issue with it. Some people seem to think his log home already has a bedroom and that his bedroom is a full sized apartment. If that is indeed the case, then it looks like a bedroom for a log home is going to cost quite a bit more than a regular bedroom.

I don’t think it is. The new log home addition at the end of the thread had already been approved for a residential lot. One of the major objections to log homes is that they are built into the lot. The logic behind that is that since it is next to the road and there is no room to move, it is going to be a very uncomfortable/dangerous place to live. It’s a valid point, but it is not the reason behind the objection.

Log homes are basically a log cabin with a log roof. They are not very comfortable to live in if you are not familiar with the process of building log homes. Even if the new addition is not a log cabin, it does not sound like it is very comfortable either. The process to build a log home is pretty much the same as it is to build a house: you start out by digging a hole, laying a log, and then you cover it with dirt.

Log homes are certainly not a good option for a new home. Although they are not exactly cheap, their upkeep is fairly expensive. Also, the fact that they are not a very comfortable option for a new home if you are not familiar with building log homes, makes them a relatively poor choice for a new home.
