For years, I used to walk my dog down the sidewalk and then buy a newspaper every time I got to the supermarket.
The problem with newspapers is that they don’t do so well with the weather. You can always go for the paper you bought on the way in, but it’s not exactly that great for keeping your dog clean.
We actually used to walk our dog down the main street of our local shopping center with the newspaper in our hands, but eventually gave up on it. When the weather was good we would just hang on to it until we found a convenient spot to sit down and read it. Now that our weather is bad, and we need to find a good spot to read it, we usually pick something random in the store that we can read from the floor, which works out perfectly.
We’ve been lucky lately. We’ve found a spot just outside the main part of the store where we can sit down and stay under the table and read the newspapers. We usually get about a dozen pages, but we get more if we read it closer to the beginning or end.
As we read, we’re struck by how many similarities between the stories we were reading in this week’s newspapers and the reality of life here in the suburbs. We read about the same people (the same families) buying the same houses, driving the same cars, getting married in the same churches, and falling in love with the same people.
We’re all part of the same system, and we all share some of the same problems. We know this because the same people who sell our house also do the same things we do. And in our society, no one is going to say, “That’s not a problem.” We’re all part of the same system that we have to deal with. We’re all part of the same human race.
Thats exactly right. Were all part of the same human race, we all share many of the same problems. We all have to deal with the same kinds of stuff, we all need to deal with the same kinds of stuff, and we all have the same problems. We all have to have houses. We all have to commute to places. We all have to spend money. We all have to buy things. We all have to be part of the same system.
I don’t know if there’s a name for this, but I think it’s like the feeling we get when we watch a movie. It’s just like when you think you’ve seen everything and then it all comes back to life. It feels like a story.
The difference between that and just being a spectator is that we don’t just watch. We decide what to watch, and we decide what to watch it with. In real life we can’t just be spectators; we have to participate in the world.
