In many ways the basement is the heart of my house. Just a few steps down from the kitchen, the basement acts as a storage room on warm days, a den on cool, and a home office on even-temperature days. Without the basement, my home would be devoid of both warmth and coolness.
It’s pretty cool that the basement is so important, but it’s a sad fact that we have such a small space in our homes that we have to use it up all the time. Our basement is probably more than the size of our kitchen, and I haven’t even had a basement remodel yet.
Now that we have the necessary space and the proper tools, remodeling a basement is the next step in the process. In my experience, you have to build up to the point of needing to remodel the basement before you can start to take the extra steps to get to the next level of remodeling. A lot of people don’t really have the time or resources to put into a basement remodel.
In the basement remodeling video below, I show you how to do a simple room remodel that takes about 5 minutes. If this looks like something your basement could use, you should definitely consider getting a basement remodel done.
One of the most basic ways to get a basement remodel done is to just hire a remodeler. Not to be confused with a contractor, a remodeler is a professional who will take care of your basement remodeling needs. Many of the remodelers I know are the type of guys who also paint.
If you go that route, you should hire a well-respected remodeler who has worked in the area for a while. The first thing to remember is to have a budget in mind. While you should always have a little extra cash on hand, you should also have a plan in mind for how much you want to spend. Some of the best basement remodelers I know use a scale and a time frame, which allows them to get everything done in a short amount of time.
My remodeling business is all about design, so I spend a lot of time thinking about the layout of the space I’m renovating for the client. It’s important to me that the entire area is very comfortable. For this reason, I have a set of design principles that my remodeling crew adheres to. These principles are what I ask them to follow when they work on a project, so they’re the only things these guys know.
Theyre the only things these guys know because theyre the only ones in the world that know them.
The first principle is “Be Clean.” When a remodeling crew works on their clients’ houses, they want to keep their work spaces as open and inviting as possible. They dont’ want to create a place where they feel trapped or suffocated, so they want to give as much natural light as possible. This leads to the next principle: “Be Organized.” This is the part of the job that’s the most fun to do.
I love this principle because it gives the remodelers a chance to practice their skills by taking their time in the process, learning their way around their clients new spaces, and getting the work done right. The results are usually fantastic. This is the part of the job that I love most.
